Best Dance Music 1984

1984 hit "Colour By Numbers"
As we continue to stroll down memory lane focused on the best dance music of the 80's, 1984 comes to mind with a little bit of excitement! 1984 was a formidable year in dance music for a lot of reasons. One thing that jumps out at me is the big 12" extended remixes were now actually being remixes instead of the normal radio edit with an instrumental breakdown. Dance clubs were starting to catch on and the music began to take on a different life on it's own.

1984 was a big year for some artists and one that comes to mind immediately is Madonna. After appearing on the MTV awards show, "Like A Virgin" would stay on everyone's lips for the next year and a half. Culture Club also had a big year with "Colour by Numbers" and groups like Wang Chung and The Fixx would have memorable hit's.
Dance music also started a new trend in 1984 with something called Break Dancing. The street dance would become all the rage. Break dancing was thought to have started in the 70's but it eventually caught on in the 80's, even though rappers looked down at it.

1984 was also the year that the US Bell system was broken up. Other 84 memory's include the introduction to Apple's Macintosh, The 84 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, The Louisiana World Fair, The Vanessa Williams Miss America Scandal, and the Famine plague of Ethiopia.

1984 had some of the best 80's dance music, and we will explore the year in further detail in upcoming posts. So we have to ask, what was your favorite dance song of 1984?
